The Beautiful Noise

The title song from Salim’s 2005 second full length solo album. For many of us, the first collection of Salim songs we listened to over and over for months. Full of beautiful, serious, intelligent pop songs – two of which have become real favorites, widely known among and requested by fans – the love song, Montreal and the song of guidance for his young son, The World Is Full Of People Who Want To Hurt You. His next solo album, Snowing In My Heart was released in 2007, with its already popular Don’t Be Afraid. A collection of sad but melodic songs with superb instrumentation.

Salim continued to write and record songs at an admirable pace – which lead to Constellation in 2009 and Hit Parade in 2011 – and Skeleton Closet on the way. So what happens to those older songs? As music fans, we all know the feeling of attending a show or concert of an artist we really admire and dying to hear one of our favorites. But there is only so much time – much of which is spent on new material.

Well, recently we heard buzz that Salim was plotting to bring back some of the songs from the 2005 & 2007 releases – and perform them with his friend, former band member, and frequent accompanist – Chris Holt. So, we approached Salim and this is what we learned:

The reason I decided to do these shows is because, like many artists often do, we immerse ourselves in constantly moving forward with creating new music. Over the last few hectic years of family life and the making of and releasing of Constellation & Hit Parade I simply got caught up in moving forward. Part of the process involved forming two new bands, the Treefort 5 & the Travoltas. With these bands came a ton of new songs. The Beautiful Noise & Snowing In My Heart records had songs that represented a certain period of my life and as I filtered more and more new songs into my live sets, many of the older songs stopped getting played. At this point there simply isn’t enough time to play more than a song or two a show from my older releases.”

“Recently I was compelled to revisit Snowing in My Heart when I was having a particularly difficult day. The kids were in the car with me as we listened to “Hang On” and then the rest of the CD. They both really responded to the music, particularly Gavin, who is 10 now. In seeing this music for the 1st time through them, so to speak, I realized that I really should dust these songs off & do a special show or two featuring them. So Chris Holt & I are now planning to re-insert these songs into our brains & hands…”

Now we know – and can look forward to this gift of great songs in the coming months. Salim is planning for one show at his Pleasantry Lane Studio – these shows are always popular, with limited seating they always sell out. Salim will consider doing one of the shows as a house concert & there may also be a band show in the works.

Keep your eyes & ears open for details.
